Britain will face a shortage of alcohol this Christmas unless the Government steps up its efforts to address a shortage of HGV drivers, the drinks industry has told Grant Shapps.
The prospect of limited booze lines follows panic buying at fuel pumps, soaring heating prices and shortages of items ranging from consumer electronics to crisps and vegan sausage rolls.
The Wine and Spirit Trade Association (WSTA) said 49 businesses, including Moët Hennessy UK, Laurent-Perrier UK, Pernod Ricard UK, C&C Group and Matthew Clark, had put their names to a letter to the Transport Secretary, calling on him to take urgent action.
Britain will face a shortage of alcohol this Christmas unless the Government steps up its efforts to address a shortage of HGV drivers, the drinks industry has told Grant Shapps
'There is mounting concern amongst our membership that unless urgent action is taken, we will fall deeper into delivery chaos,' said WSTA CEO Miles Beale.
'We are already seeing major delays on wine and spirit delivery times which is pushing up costs and limiting the range of products available to UK consumers.'
The WSTA said its members had reported that importing products was taking up to five times longer than it did a year ago.
The association added that businesses which were previously able to fulfil orders in two to three days were now experiencing shipments taking 15 days to process.
However, Majestic Wine, the UK's largest specialist retailer, told MailOnline it had prepared for such a scenario by stockpiling some 1.8 million bottles.
A spokesman said: 'We are aware of broader market issues with supply from Europe, particularly with the movement of freight from some key regions which is affecting supplies from the continent.
'We do also anticipate challenges in some New World areas; particularly the UK's favourite wine producer - New Zealand, due to the difficult harvests the country has faced.
'Our availability overall currently remains very good, however, and we have been planning ahead for months.
'As the UKs largest wine specialist we have had the ability to bring in over 20% more stock than last year.
'That includes over 1.8 million bottles of wine which are now in three additional warehouses - held ahead of the crucial festive period.
'In response to these issues, this may be the year we see other regions rise in prominence in the face of shortages in certain areas.
'For instance, we are anticipating record South African and English Sparkling sales - in place of New Zealand and Champagne respectively.
'With the extra stock we are bringing in, and the focus on intuitive sourcing from up and coming regions - we are confident this will mean, at Majestic at least, our shelves will remain full.
'It might also be the year our customers discover a host of new regions and wines we are sure they will love'.
But the WTSA also noted that freight costs had increased by 7%, as delivery firms have had to increase HGV drivers' wages to retain them.
It wants Mr Shapps to extend a temporary visa scheme for HGV drivers from February 28, 2022, to a minimum of one year, to ease the burden on industry and allow for a sufficient increase in domestic drivers.
It also wants his department to facilitate better routing of freight from ports and smaller UK-based driver networks for short-haul journeys.
The Department for Transport had no immediate comment.
The teaser trailer for upcoming movie ‘Lightyear’ has prompted the ‘This Pic Goes Hard’ meme to resurface on Twitter.
If you’re seeing the ‘This Pic Goes Hard’ meme everywhere but you’re not quite sure what it means, allow us to explain.
‘This Pic Goes Hard’, or ‘This Pic Goes so Hard, Feel Free to Screenshot’ meme is a catchphrase used during mass-screenshotting of an image macro of a space monkey smoking a cigar. The meme originated back in August of this year, according to Know Your Meme.
The viral trend initially took off on iFunny, before making the rounds on Instagram and Twitter.
As per Know Your Meme, iFunny user @FloorMeat originally shared an image of a space monkey smoking a cigar, captioning it ‘This Pic Goes so Hard, Feel Free to Screenshot’. The rest is, well, history.
A ton of people have since reposted the caption and the screenshot of the monkey image, which was created by artist Romain Thirion.
Gimmick accounts of the trend have even emerged since the spread of the viral meme.
Since gaining popularity in August 2021, the meme somewhat died down a little bit… until the ‘Lightyear’ teaser trailer released.
Twitter user @DolanDark tweeted: “Why does the new Buzz Lightyear trailer look like a “this pic goes hard feel free to screenshot” image”, with many people agreeing.
Since, the ‘This Pic Goes Hard’ meme has picked up again on social media.
‘Lighyear’ is an upcoming Pixar movie, due to be released in 2022.
Actor Chris Evans is set to voice the animated character, introducing the ‘real-life’ human astronaut who inspired the toy seen in ‘Toy Story’.
Take a look at these examples of the ‘This Pic Goes Hard’ meme that are ciruclating on the internet.
